Fast talking gambler John Deutsch lures beautiful Elizabeth Shropshire from her isolated West Virginia coal town to booming 1912 New Orleans promising her escape, independence, and a loving marriage. John fails in his promises, with only lodging in a French Quarter hovel and soon the two are destitute. John shows his true self by expecting Elizabeth to compromise her morals and becomes a pawn in his negotiations with his lecherous creditors.

When she learns of her parents’ death only days, before John is discovered dead, Elizabeth is alone with few options. With little education or work experience, her choices are limited and threaten to crush her until she decides to yield to realities and do what she must do to survive – in Storyville.
